"Do not accept a bribe, for a bribe blinds those who see and twists the words of the innocent." The Lord said to him, “Who gave man his mouth? Who makes him deaf or mute? Who gives him sight or makes him blind ? Is it not I, the LORD?" Jesus frequently used people who were blind to demonstrate that He came to heal blindness – both of the eyes and of the heart. This did not mean that individuals who were blind themselves were spiritually lost, but that they were unable to see, as someone who is spiritually lost is unable to see the Truth. The Bible also frequently used the analogy of being blind to being spiritually lost. The “Blind leading the blind” is a scriptural reference indicating that Christians were not to act in a way that would lead non-believers astray (acting in a hypocritical way). In the New Testament Jesus frequently made a comparison between those who were physically blind and those that were spiritually blind. The Bible's message was that God has a divine purpose for everyone and is able to use people's weakness to His glory. God detested the evilness but this was not a reflection of how God saw those with disabilities. The people were not giving God their best, but giving to Him what had little or no value to them. God saw into the people’s hearts, knowing they did not value animals (or people) with disabilities. The Israelites were tempted to give sacrifices that were not true sacrifices (sacrificing animals that were not their best). In Leviticus and Deuteronomy, two books found in the Old Testament, there is instruction in how people should enter into the presence of God and making sacrifices that are worthy. ![]() Christians are called to treat people with disabilities with respect and not bring them harm. He would not have had to make these commands if they were being treated with respect. Throughout the Old Testament God instructed His people to not mistreat those who were blind. Old Testament passages concerning people who were blind give us an insight into how blindness was viewed and treated during this period of history.
